Does anyone know the true story of the saying ';touch wood';..what does it mean?

It is thought to have originated from pagan times when they held trees in high regard, perhaps because of wood spirits. By touching the tree out of respect they thought it would give them protection from a particular wood spirit.

But it could have originated from christianity with jesus being crucified on the cross, by touching wood it could be a sign of respect and belief.Does anyone know the true story of the saying ';touch wood';..what does it mean?
Spirits were supposed to live in trees and even exist in the wood once the tree had been cut down and turned into furniture. By knocking or touching the wood, you were supposed to be calling on these spirits to help you or to bring luck your way.Does anyone know the true story of the saying ';touch wood';..what does it mean?
